[00:00:00] Welcome to the St. Landry Parish Sports Podcast produced by the Parish Circuit. I'm David Riley and I will be your host. [00:00:08] Welcome to the first ever episode of the St. Landry Sports Podcast. The purpose of this podcast is to provide quick 5 to 10 minute highlights of what's going on in high school sports in our community. We're going to focus just on St. Landry Parish. Episodes will drop weekly on Mondays, so keep on the lookout for those on socials, the Parish Circuit website and wherever you listen to podcasts. I'm excited about this because I love sports. I believe that sports have the potential to teach incredible life lessons, challenge players to work hard and gather the community together in a positive way. Let's get started. [00:00:47] For the first episode of the Saint Landry Parish Sports Podcast we we get to talk about some exciting things going on in basketball playoffs. It's a good time to start this podcast because we've got some some cool things going on in the St Landry Parish High School teams. [00:01:03] So as the basketball playoffs are heating up, we've seen some upsets, some deep runs and one team is just two wins away from a state title. So let's break it down. [00:01:15] North Central beat West St. John 63 to 48 in the Division 4 first round of playoffs and they are going to play at Vinton, the number eight seed tomorrow. That is Tuesday at 6:30pm And I should have said we're starting with the boys playoffs here first and then we'll move on to the girls side of things for the St. Landry parish schools. So again, North Central, they'll be playing VINTON in the second round of playoffs tomorrow at 6:30pm they are going to be, let's see, traveling to that game. So that'll be an away game. [00:01:56] Northwest High, this is impressive. They're ranked number two in Division two. [00:02:01] They had a buy the first round and they're going to face Pearl river, the number 15 seed who upset Lakeshore 66 to 51 in their first game of playoffs. And their game is tomorrow at 7:00pm Again, that's Tuesday at 7:00pm and I think we can expect the Raiders to make a strong run. Okay, Pearl river is going to come in number 15 confident after a win. [00:02:24] Northwest High, ranked number two at home, should be favorites. Go ahead and support them tomorrow at 7 if you can make it out. OHS, they went into playoffs, they made it to the first round, but they lost to Woodlawn from Shreveport in the Division 2 playoffs. Tough loss, but they close out what has been a pretty Good season for them. [00:02:49] WCA Westminster Christian Academy. [00:02:52] They came into playoffs, ranked number 13 and in their first round they beat Hanson Memorial 63 to 44. That was a 13 versus 20 matchup there in Division 4. [00:03:03] And they are off to play Central Catholic, the number four seed in the state in Division 4 tomorrow. That's Tuesday at 6pm at Central Catholic. So if you're ready to travel, go out and support Westminster Christian Academy boys in the second round of playoffs. [00:03:19] OC Opelous is Catholic. They beat Sacred Heart 58, 33. That was a 10v11 matchup there in the Division 4 playoffs. And they are set to play St. Martin's Episcopal, the number two seed in the state, tomorrow at 6pm so that'll be a big road challenge for them facing off with the number two seed. Go out and support if you can. [00:03:42] And then J.S. clark. [00:03:45] They hosted Ascension Catholic last week but lost in the first round 45 to 59 in the first round there. All right, now on to girls playoff basketball. [00:03:59] OHS beat Pearl River 53 to 24, but in the second round of playoffs lost to South Beauregard 72 to 62. [00:04:09] They had a good season. They finished the season, the regular season, 18 and nine. Solid year for the OHS girls. [00:04:17] Northwest High School beat Abbeville 44 to 40 in the first round of playoffs, but lost to the number four, Wasman 65 to 26 in the second round of playoffs. Last week, North Central made it to playoffs but lost in the first round to Grand Lake, the number 10 seed. [00:04:40] A tough, tough first round matchup for them. Number 23 facing off number 10, St. Ed's the girls team was ranked number five in the state for Division 4. They had a first round bye but were upset by the number 21, St. Mary's in a close game. They lost 65 to 60 in that second round of playoffs. [00:05:03] OC they beat St. Frederick in the first round 44 to 28, but lost to Cedar Creek in the second round of playoffs. [00:05:15] Westminster Christian, they had a close first round game. They beat Hanson Memorial 51 to 50. [00:05:24] That was an 11 versus 22 matchup in Division 4. But they had to travel to Louis McGehee and lost 43 to 17 in that second round of playoffs and then some. Probably the biggest highlight here of basketball playoffs. Out of St. Landry Parish, the J.S. clark girls ranked number two in the state. [00:05:46] They beat Pickering 66 to 22. [00:05:50] That was after a bye in the first round. So that got them out of the second round of playoffs. They beat Vermilion Catholics 6837 in the quarterfinals. That's a pretty big point spread for a quarterfinals game in the state tournament. And they are off to play Ouachita Christian. [00:06:08] They'll actually play in the University center in Hammond. They're going to play Ouachita Christian Wednesday at 1pm over in Hammond. That's the semifinals, folks. If they win that game, they will be off to the state championship and that's some exciting stuff for St. Landry Parish. So go out and support JS Clark at 1pm Wednesday if you can. [00:06:30] That's some exciting stuff. [00:06:32] Well, I wanted to focus mostly on basketball playoffs. We're just in time for that for the beginning of this podcast. But if you have any other things that are going on in winter sports, I know some of the sports have wrapped up. Soccer, state championships happened last week. [00:06:48] If you have any highlights, some player successes, coaches successes, team successes that you'd like to see highlighted or that I might not know about, go ahead and reach out. Contact us. I'd love to highlight some of the other things going on or that have gone on in our winter sports season. [00:07:06] Look out for our next podcast. I'll be kind of wrapping up some things related to basketball next week, but also looking forward to our spring sports. Some baseball, some softball, some track and field, and anything else that might be coming up. Thanks for tuning in for the first episode of the Saint Landry Parish Sports Podcast. Look forward to having you join us again soon. Bye.
