[00:00:03] Speaker A: Welcome to the parish circuit. Do you like my Dracula
[00:00:07] Speaker B: look? That caught me off guard. I liked it.
[00:00:09] Speaker A: Did it work
[00:00:09] Speaker B: out? We need to do. You need to do more themed intros.
[00:00:13] Speaker A: You need to do a themed intro. Why do I have to do all of them?
[00:00:17] Speaker B: You have the button.
[00:00:18] Speaker A: Let me hear your Dracula impression.
[00:00:20] Speaker B: Like a laugh.
[00:00:23] Speaker A: I don't know. What do you think? What does Dracula do?
He talks like.
[00:00:27] Speaker B: Well, he actually.
He actually impales invading Muslims.
Spikes.
[00:00:38] Speaker A: I'm sorry, I meant the Hollywood version. I didn't mean the historically accurate version of Vlad the Impaler.
[00:00:46] Speaker B: Gotcha.
[00:00:46] Speaker A: Thank you.
[00:00:47] Speaker B: I have. I have read Bram Stoker's Dracula before, and, you know, it was mildly entertaining, and it got us, our whole culture, down a road of.
Not a good road. We'll just say that. I'll be. I'll be honest.
[00:01:01] Speaker A: Can we talk about some other mild entertainment that could take us down a bad road?
[00:01:06] Speaker B: Yes, let's do.
[00:01:08] Speaker A: Parish government's throwing its annual haunted house.
[00:01:12] Speaker B: But will it.
[00:01:13] Speaker A: Come on, Jesse. But
[00:01:14] Speaker B: come on. Will it feature a historically accurate Vlad the Impaler?
That's my question,
[00:01:21] Speaker A: man. I hope so. I would go to that haunted house like, Vlad the Impaler. You say Vlad is Vlad the Correct. I'm just
[00:01:29] Speaker B: assuming Vlad is the correct pronunciation, but I could be totally wrong.
[00:01:32] Speaker A: Vlad. Vlad. We'll find it out. So parish government's getting ready to throw its annual.
Whatever this thing is. Haunted house, fun house, spook house, whatever you want to call it.
[00:01:46] Speaker B: I think it's a haunted house.
[00:01:47] Speaker A: Yeah. And they've done this for the last several years.
And here we are.
Here's the thing, man. If there was ever a time to not do this, now is that time, man. The auditors just, like, were just in the building. We were just talking about how we might be almost completely out of money.
And I got an email from the press person over at the saint leg of parish government. They said, hey, guys, our haunted house is about to open again. I thought, oh, man. So I emailed him back and I was like, hey, where does the money for this come from? I know that's the first question that people are gonna ask, like, where does the money for this come from? And they hit me back pretty quick. I appreciated that. They got back to me pretty fast. And they said, we have sponsors. And they even listed out the sponsors and talked about how much money each one had paid or the tiers that they were sponsoring in or something like that.
And when I saw that, I looked at it and I thought, ah, okay. And I Did the math real quick and it adds up to about $10,000. Okay.
There's no way.
Let me say that differently. It is highly unlikely that an event like this that lasts several days can be produced for $10,000 or less. Just as a guy who runs events, you know, when I run a weekend event for Even just like 200, 250 people, it's cost us $15,000 to be able to pull that off. This is not even a large scale event. Doesn't involve a ton of security staff, doesn't involve a ton of support staff. It's run by mostly volunteers and it's in a venue that cost me nothing. It still costs like $15,000 to put this thing on.
[00:03:34] Speaker B: Yeah.
So you're skeptical now?
[00:03:37] Speaker A: I'm skeptical.
[00:03:37] Speaker B: What if they.
What if they showed the numbers? They showed the receipts and.
[00:03:45] Speaker A: Well, Jesse ain't scared of showing receipts, as he has proven.
[00:03:49] Speaker B: Sure. So that would be a good follow up. Then we can maybe. We're
[00:03:52] Speaker A: gonna ask
[00:03:53] Speaker B: either before or after the fact. Just be kind of like, all right, so give us the numbers. How much did we make?
How much did the parish make or lose
[00:04:01] Speaker A: off of this event?
[00:04:03] Speaker B: But I think that leads directly into a another question.
[00:04:07] Speaker A: Here it is. Oh, you're teed up. Let's go.
[00:04:12] Speaker B: Why,
[00:04:13] Speaker A: thank you.
[00:04:14] Speaker B: On God's Greener.
[00:04:16] Speaker A: Let's go, let's go. Say it, Dave.
[00:04:18] Speaker B: Is the government running a haunted house?
[00:04:21] Speaker A: I'm so happy that we're here now. Yes.
Yes. Why? Why? Oh, man. It's not the role of government. This is not the state's job. Right. This is just totally not the state's job. But see, this is the disposition that you have to deal with, and you have to deal with it all the way down. What is the role of government? What is the government supposed to be there to do? And if you can't answer that question effectively, you will have haunted houses and worse and worse.
[00:04:50] Speaker B: Look at US Aid, stuff it was paying for overseas. Not even in our country.
[00:04:55] Speaker A: I know. It only. It only gets bigger. So you have to ask the question, what's the role of government? Okay, now the traditional two views inside of recent American history is that the government exists to provide services.
Okay? Government exists to provide services to the people. Now that's kind of where we've landed in Saint Legraw Parish. That's why we have a haunted house that's funded through.
Even if all the people donate for it, somebody's time is still being used to go and acquire those donations.
There's storage of the materials that they're using. Because they talked about. Yeah, we reuse a lot of stuff that we use every year. It's being stored somewhere. Like, people are getting it.
[00:05:36] Speaker B: Even if the building is owned by the parish that they're using, there's still the upkeep and all the. It's
[00:05:42] Speaker A: a whole thing.
[00:05:42] Speaker B: Administrative costs.
[00:05:43] Speaker A: Yeah. It can't. It's. I highly doubt that it only costs $10,000 to put the event on.
I'm sure that it costs more than that.
I understand that people are like, yeah, it's nice to have events for kids, which I, you know. Okay, well, this episode could take a turn real fast. I'd be like, well, a haunted house is not one of those things. But let's talk about that another time.
Where we are is hung up in the government is here to provide services category.
The traditional, or maybe I should say more contemporary conservative view is the same. Just less services.
[00:06:22] Speaker B: Right, right, right, right.
[00:06:23] Speaker A: Yeah. We still believe the government's here to provide services. Just less of them.
[00:06:27] Speaker B: Right,
[00:06:27] Speaker A: Less of them.
And the way. The place that we would roll it all back to is that the government is given the sword by God to punish the evildoer.
[00:06:39] Speaker B: Roll it back to Romans 13.
[00:06:41] Speaker A: Roll it back to Romans 13. Roll it back to when Noah gets off the boat and establishes government in the first place and establishes consequences for your actions. Like consequences. Like judicial consequences for your actions. Okay. Like, that's where government lives. Okay. And then. And then God gave us, throughout the Old Testament case law lots of things that we can carry forth and draw logical conclusions from into general equity conclusions from. To apply law in the time in which we live right now. This is what made Alfred the Great so great, you know, as he was reading through the Bible and started applying biblical case law to the world that he lived in at the time. And it blessed and grew Western civilization considerably over that time.
[00:07:31] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. And we should heed the warnings that God gave through Samuel, for example, of what government will be tempted to become.
[00:07:42] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:07:42] Speaker B: They
[00:07:43] Speaker A: will take your daughters, they will conscript your sons.
They will tax you at 10%.
[00:07:49] Speaker B: Right. They.
If. Yeah, right. If unchecked, government will communicate that it is like God by charging you a tax as high as 10%. Do
[00:08:04] Speaker A: you hear the sarcasm? Do you hear the sarcasm coming off? That's because it's dripping right now. We're taxed at more like a functional 50%.
And still people are like, let's give them some more. Let's hand some more taxes.
[00:08:15] Speaker B: And by the functional 50, you're talking about. You got income tax, you got property tax, you got sales
[00:08:19] Speaker A: tax, inheritance tax.
When you buy a car. Golly, you pay taxes on a car. There's a reason when you buy a new car, they roll in tax, title and license to your loan. Because if you knew
[00:08:33] Speaker B: how much of it was tax,
[00:08:34] Speaker A: how much of it was tax, you would throw up. Like, it's so bad, man. It's so bad.
So, yeah. So what's the role of government? Haunted houses.
All right, guys, that's the end of the episode.
That's not the role of government. That's not the role of government.
[00:08:52] Speaker B: No,
[00:08:53] Speaker A: we should not be participating in those kinds of things. Come on, man. Come on. But I would push our more conservative listeners to say, now roll it back even farther because they would. They'd probably agree with us and be like, yeah,
[00:09:05] Speaker B: yeah, don't do the haunted house.
[00:09:07] Speaker A: We shouldn't do a haunted house.
[00:09:08] Speaker B: Give me another stadium.
[00:09:12] Speaker A: Yeah. Or they would say, maybe. Some would say, yeah, we definitely shouldn't do a haunted house right now.
To which I'm like, agreed.
It's not just right now, though.
[00:09:24] Speaker B: Gotcha. Yeah, yeah, I see what you're saying.
[00:09:25] Speaker A: Because of the budget stuff and all those things that are going on,
[00:09:27] Speaker B: become functional pragmatists where it's like, well, yeah, if we had the extra money, then we'll throw haunted
[00:09:33] Speaker A: houses. Just throw it up there. Just knock it out. Yeah. No, what I'm saying is, hey, let's throw all this stuff out. Let's not pursue a haunted house at all ever.
Like, if somebody wants to do something fun, they can just do it. Listen, guys, let me tell you something. So I've shifted a little bit in my position on Halloween stuff, and we don't really do Halloween anymore. In my house. We celebrate Reformation Day. Let's go. Okay, so we celebrate Reformation Day as a people. We don't celebrate hell anymore. But when we did, which we did, you know, I am semper reformanda. I am still reforming. It's happening. It's real.
But when we did celebrate Halloween, one of the things that we did was we just got our whole church together and we took over South Park. Do you remember this, Dave?
[00:10:16] Speaker B: Yeah,
[00:10:16] Speaker A: we just. We took over south park and we threw. We got a bunch of cars. Everybody decorated their cars. We sat on the back of them, we gave out candy, and tons of people showed up.
[00:10:27] Speaker B: It didn't. Didn't want. We counted one year, and it was like 1500 people.
[00:10:31] Speaker A: Yes. The line snaked from the throughway on Creswell. And it wrapped all the way around the parking lot and went to, like, the exit of the park out on Bertha. Like, it, like, it was wild how many people showed up for that.
[00:10:47] Speaker B: Yeah,
[00:10:47] Speaker A: it really was. But. But my point is, you don't need the state to put this kind of stuff together. If you wanted to do something, people can just do it. People can just do this kind of stuff. We don't need the government. This is not the government's lane. Get out of this lane. Government.
Quit this, Jesse. Get out of here. Don't do that kind of stuff. Let's focus up on just getting the things done that need to get done. Then we'll worry about all this other stuff another time. Or never.
Preferably never.
Yep. Right?
[00:11:18] Speaker B: Yep. Absolutely.
[00:11:19] Speaker A: That's it. Guys, thanks so much for listening to another episode of the Paris Circuit. We appreciate you.
Even though some of you guys say that this podcast is nothing but a bunch of pie in the sky bullshit, we still appreciate you.
[00:11:34] Speaker B: We love you.
[00:11:37] Speaker A: You can go to the parishcircuit.com to find more information about the Parish Circuit. Articles that we've written, blogs that we have published, news related sources, podcasts and other things. You can also support the show.
[00:11:49] Speaker B: That's right. We haven't said that in a while.
[00:11:50] Speaker A: No, but some people are. I checked it again today. There's more people supporting.
[00:11:54] Speaker B: Really?
[00:11:55] Speaker A: I was surprised. I know. I was like, look at that.
[00:11:57] Speaker B: Have we broken three figures yet in our bank account?
[00:12:00] Speaker A: Just barely. I think
[00:12:02] Speaker B: we're over the big 1 00.
[00:12:03] Speaker A: I think we are over $100 in the bank right now, guys. It's crazy.
[00:12:08] Speaker B: We should start a haunted house.
[00:12:11] Speaker A: You know what? I could do one. For 100 bucks, I could do it. We could. It'd be fine. Guys, thank you all so much for listening to another episode of the Purse Circuit. We appreciate you and we will see you next time.
